The ongoing debate of whether competition among students or cooperation with other students should be encouraged continues in society and education site. Some people believe that competition should be encouraged at school and others think that cooperation is more important than competition. This essay will discuss both viewpoints.

Advantage of competition

First of all, competition at school has good impacts on young people. In order to win, right decisions and well-organized planning are required. Competition in sports games, board games, even tests, is a good practice for young people to develop their decision-making skills or to plan proactively. As these skills are quite useful in their future, competition should be introduced in education. Some young people might not help and support each other because they are opponents and unwilling to share useful information. However, this situation is also great case study for young people to learn how to take initiative in a group, how to compromise with others.

Advantage of cooperation

On the other hand, cooperation with others provides people with opportunities to learn social skills. Cooperation means helping and respecting each other. Nowadays, the establishment of personal network requires high social skills. In order to make a strong team, high communication ability is demanded. Moreover, listening skills are required for understanding each other. The only concern is that young children will be weak under pressure because of non-stress surrounding. Cooperation doesn’t mean that they always do together. It’s to achieve same goal together. It’s sometimes sports, art or music.

Conclusion

To sum up, balance is important between competition and cooperation for young people who have been training various types of social skills. I think that learning competition and cooperation are different skills, therefore, educational people should consider both the advantages and the disadvantages of them and introduce both.
