Some people warn that consumerism causes people to place in the surrounding where is too much importance on goods and wealth. Meanwhile, others think that a consumer culture is beneficial for improving people’s standard of living. This essay discusses both sides of this argument and then I will give my own opinion.
Disadvantages of consumerism
The negative aspect of a consumer culture is that it causes people to consider wealth as the most important factor that can make them happy. Therefore, people might spend too much time on earning money and have less time with their families and friends. Our cherish time is not spared for the most important people. In addition to this, the traditional values such as frugal life could be lost in the consumer society. This will lead to a throw-away culture and overconsumption issues. As a consequence, a depletion of natural resources and excessive disposal of waste leads to environmental pollution.
Advantages of consumerism
On the other hand, the most significant advantage of a consumer culture is that it generates wealth for a country. The taxes imposed for products will increase the revenue for the whole society. Afterwards, the government can invest the revenue for citizens. Furthermore, the jobs, which are created for manufacturing and retailing site, can offer more employment opportunities for the local residents and will reduce poverty. This means that criminal also will be reduced at the end.
Conclusion
To conclude, I believe that consumerism provide remarkable advantages. However, I am inclined to believe that the drawbacks of a greedy and materialistic society outweigh the advantages because current consumption is not sustainable. Future generations will inherit a planet with fewer resources and higher levels of pollution. Do your children and young generation around you understand what is the most important in their life except money and products? We should convey young generation that there are important things beyond money and products, such as love, justice, trustworthiness.
