It is often said that some people were born with certain characteristics that enable them to become great leaders. The alternative view is that leadership is a learnable skill depending on required level. This essay will discuss about the both viewpoints; however, I agree with the latter point as the experience is more important than innate ability.
How a great leader was born?
It is true that many individuals were born with distinctive personal traits that allow them the opportunity to become talented leaders. Leaders tend to be those who are charming and persuasive. In contrast, those who lack of these characteristics may have a difficulty inspiring the belief and loyalty that all leaders require. As a result, they follow to others rather than becoming a leader.
For instance, a sale person, who often fails to convince the clients to deal businesses, will not be able to take the responsibility as a leader. The more convincing salesmen are more likely to rise to that role. Because a succeed sales person has skills about how to manage conflict, negotiate with others, has a wide range of network based on trustworthiness, has plenty of information and the own insight. By the on-site experiences, these people accumulate necessary leadership skills. Therefore, they are usually desired by team members in an organisation or executive people.
Leadership is learnable skill?
There are some people who desire to be a leader due to their ambitions. Some of them just want to obey others nevertheless they don’t have enough skills and experiences. Or they just want authority to use money as expense. Others might believe that they must be a leader due to their high educational background nevertheless it just means that they’re just familiar with a particular subject. Since they have less practical skill about both leadership and on-side skill, those type of leaders have a tendency to control people while shouting and screaming them emotionally rather than managing people calmly. They also speak a lot without active listening. This is due to lack of confidence,
However, some people assert that leadership skills can be achieved through proper training and effort. As you know, there are a lot of institutes offering leadership training programmes helping those who want to learn leadership. Although it needs actual experiences during/after learning, the passion which want to be ‘’a good leader’’ should be respected.
Public speaking is one of the great skills to convey their thought and vision to the members. Some people are shy and lack of confidence, however it will make them better leaders. Remember, some people misunderstand that the practice of public speech is to memorize the script line by line. Although the practice is important, that is not right way since it’s not an exam.
All leaders are good?
It’s great to provide opportunities for people who desire to be a leader. It usually takes long time to be a good one. However, if it doesn’t work well, executive people should take right action to change the leader as an organization. Some leaders intimidate employees while acting nicely to high status people. It might be no issue internally, however your competitors and the connections in your industry see the situation well more than the internal people. The realistic issues cannot be hidden and it will reveal sooner or later by the atmosphere, comments by leaders, behaviour of employees.
Conclusion
In conclusion, there are different traits of leaders, who were born with certain characteristics that enable them to become great leaders, and who learnt leadership by training sessions. What type of leaders do you want to be? Or, what type of leaders do you want to follow? Either of way, I hope that great leaders will lead people/organization to right direction.
