Living away from parents during university

While some people think that students ought to live alone during university, others believed that it is better for them to remain living at home. Although it’s based on not only children’s own decision but geographical reason to live away from home, children can choose if they still live together with family or live alone during university. I think that children benefit from living alone because of some reasons.

Advantage 1 ーMental independentー

Firstly, one of the main reasons why it is advantage for children to live alone is that they become mentally independent of their parents. University is the time for children to spread their wings and try new ideas or action. Some actions could have been restricted by parents and the advice from parents might have annoyed them. However, all responsibility will be under children whatever happen. They may mistake and face dangerous and difficult situation, sometimes. However, they can learn how to responsible for their life themselves.

If children made wrong decision and had negative impact on them, they definitely will think why it was caused, how it could be avoided. At that time, child will learn to what extend they were protected by family members. It nourishes sincere attitude to accept their weakness and some advice from adult and appreciate their background at their home. By living alone, without the influence of their parents, they develop rounder, decisive characters able to function well in the world.

Advantage 2 ーFinancial Managementー

Second advantage to children fleeing the parental nest is that they learn how to manage money, which is one of the key points for living alone. Most students regard university period as a stepping stone to adulthood. By learning to live on a budget, they develop the skills needed once they are earning a salary and balancing their finances. Renting property also comes with responsibility to both landlords and housemates. This is a further lesson to learn in useful life skills.

Advantage 3 ーPractical Life Experienceー

Third advantage is to get practical life skills. In case of room share in a house or apartment, children certainly will learn how to compromise with opponent. It’s said that your common sense is others preposterous. If people are all different nationality, culture barrier must be another challenge. Living with others provide children with how to interact with others. As a result, they will improve communication skill and learn negotiation skill, compromising skill which could be useful after starting their carrier.

Of course, daily management should not be omitted. Meal is not never provided if they cook/prepare for. House is not never clean if they don’t. Self-management is the most important part in living alone.

Different View point

In different view point, however, regardless of those benefit for children, living alone is costly. For a small proportion of university students, their finances might require them to stay at home for as long as possible until they are finally able to support themselves through paid work. Therefore, it makes sense to live with family during university as well.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while it might not be feasible for all students, living away from parents helps university students develop strength of character and useful life skills needed for when they enter working life. However, if it’s allowed financially, I think that it will be great experience for their life.
