Punishment is necessary to learn right or wrong?

There are matters of great concern about how much freedom children should be given and what kind of punishment could be used to control them. Too much freedom and lack of necessary control often lead children to go astray while too much punishment makes them dull and less creative. Nowadays, young parents, which called millennials, do not discipline children strictly like previous generation was done. Some people warn this situation may have negative impact on children when they become adult.

Why punishment is necessary to children?

Punishment is meant to help children learn lessons, therefore certain punishments that do not involve violence is useful. To begin with, early childhood experience and lessons have impact on someone’s life positively and negatively. Therefore, parents and teachers should try their best to teach good quality of morality, ethics, justice to children. Children are curious and sometimes less mature to understand harmful effects of doing something. They often need to use certain punishment to teach valuable lessons to them, but should not be driven by personal anger or frustration. However, in reality, human being tends to attack and bully to weaker people like children.

While physical punishment is no longer used in most of the developed countries, it could still be found in developing countries. This style of punishment should not be used in most of the cases. However, beating hand/butt sometimes might be needed to stimulate kids.  More effective penalties could be, for example, no entertainment time for a week, or refrain not to talk for 1-2 days, no sweets for a few days. It reminds children why he/she does not deserve those. It also might be effective to show parent’s frustration for children’s action, sometimes. There is no best way of how to punish since each children have different traits.  Either of them, the important thing is to make children think what was wrong, why it was wrong.

Punishment in the workplace

Nowadays, people who work at an international company certainly have experience to see others who have different background in their childhood. Some managers take wrong punishment to employee nevertheless those are criminal in developed countries, such as privacy invasion and human right violation. Those managers tend to yell someone in front of other employees in order to show example of the outcome of  being against those manager. In other case, they invite an employee to small room as a business meeting in order to threat and intimidate them. Punishment in childhood have impact on later our life as well. We can imagine that those managers may have sad experiences in their childhood. However, those actions are not allowed to take in the workplace.

Summary

Discipline someone is not easy. Most people do not want to be disliked. However, to be a great person, punishment is necessary to teach morality and ethics to children. It helps them learn to distinguish good things and bad ones. Just, this punishment should be psychological and practical way, not be physical one. As for punishment in the workplace, employers are not children. If a manager took wrong punishment, report to HR department and leave the company to protect yourself in the worst case.
